VINYL RALLY @ Palais de Tokyo (Paris) April 2012

In conjunction with Sonic Protest, the The vinyl rally has been selected to be part of the reopening celebrations of Paris’ prestigious Palais de Tokyo in April where it will be presented from 12pm on the 12th to Midnight on the 13th for a 36 hour non-stop exhibition. However the work is only one of many filling the three story complex during this massive event and sadly our allocated budget only covers half our estimated budget to Build, Maintain and Staff my proposed track design that careers (see below) over the 3rd floor stairwell. Therefore I’m hoping to raise AUD$3000 to help cover this shortfall with a pozible crowd source. Hopefully you can help me overcome this financial hurdle so I can showcase the work in its best possible light at this amazing exhibition.

Justice Yeldham 12" Picture Disc

dualpLOVER has decided to release a Justice Yeldham picture disc as a must have souvenir item for the upcoming Justice Yeldham tour of Europe in April. To realise this release we need to raise AUD$1500 to cover the minimum pressing of 250 units, and have decided to crowd soucre the project using a pre-sale model to make sure all copies have good homes before we even press the record. Our prices start at a little above cost for people able to pick up the discs in person during the tour. The final release will be pressed to meet our pledge requirements + 50 copies to sell on the tour after that no other copies will be made available.

American Song/Poems companies have exisited for decades, basically song sharks who prey on amateur lyricists, exploiting their ambition to break into the music business. Under the guise of a co-writing ‘partnership’, they will hastily arrange accompanying music to basically any lyrics sent in, for a fee! pitting the naivety of aspiring song writers from across North America with bored overworked sweatshop musicians.

Although their heyday was throughout the 50's 60's and 70's Incredibly I discovered these companies still exist to this day so I decided to hear what they would come up with if i presented them with some of Australia's biggest hits that failed to chart in America. So i pretended these lyrics as my own sending them lyrics to two companies, Magic Key in Utah and The Nashville Song Service in Tennessee, asking them to compose music for them.

Robbie Avenaim and Lloyd Honeybrook are Fucked. In every sense of the word. The two have been playing together in various forms for half a decade, but with both exploring the sheer extremities of their respective instruments - Robbie with his mechanical kick-drum pedals and Lloyd with his feedback sax - this duo is undoubtedly the most fucked thing they've done. Martin, formerly known as DJ Scalpel Chest is considered the 4th sexiest Asian man in Sydney. He was also runner-up in the Dr Hot competition of 1999. As a heart surgeon, an extraordinary musician and experimental sound artist, Martin is at the cutting edge of a new musical genre dubbed 'cardiologycore' (though rival medical teams have also dubbed the genre 'ambient post-heartbreak doom'). He also spent time hitting the skins for The Transplants, keeping the pulse of the band's melodic punk roots alive, in the same vein as Artery Agogo. Martin now divides his interest between twirling the needles in the suture room and twirling the decks.

Menstruation Sisters are more of a natural phenomenon than a musical group. Owing more to the sound of ice melting and eggs hatching than strummed guitars and pounded drums, the Sisters keep one ear on the ground and the other towards the atmosphere. Rather than working within the lines of modern rhythm and structure, they revert towards a primal direction, cutting off the fat and oozing forth only the most natural and unfettered sounds. Naturally, such a technique can be unsettling, as it's not something most humans are interested to hear, or have heard since upright-walking became a viable mode of transportation. This is music for those who kill their own food.

What's been described as ''a trumpet player trapped in a two dimensional universe'' is in fact the unique work of Justice Yeldham, a maverick musician with an unhealthy obsession with sheets of broken glass. In his infamous show that has astonished and bemused countless people in over 40 countries, yeldham ecstatically purses his lips against sheets of amplified glass whilst deftly employing various vocal techniques ranging from throat singing to raspberries, turning discarded shards into crude musical instruments. The results are a wild array of cacophonous noise that is strangely controlled and oddly musical. The instruments simple, original and effective premise is a welcome riposte to over complicated musical performances of modern times. A one of a kind act re-defining the expression 'don't try this at home' this show quite simply needs to be witnessed to be fully appreciated, let alone understood.

CRAB SMASHER
Crab Smasher is a NSW based group of improvisational sound sharks crafting a frenzied hodgepodge of weirdo psychedelic noise rock and experimental pop delicious. The band formed in 2002 as a cheesy electronic novelty noise act and have since mutated through a number of confusing formations into the sellout 4-5 headed rock-and-roll hydra that exists today. With about 13 or 14 CDR, cassette, and digital releases to their name, the band is currently working on a new LP, which promises to be both titillating and queer.

Brainwashed Review Zoo and Even Teach Me a Thing or Two About the Album

This terrific debut from Indonesia shows how passion, rage and sorrow translate into any language. It's a concept album reflecting cultural destruction and persistence; echoing Melt Banana, Naked City, and zeuhl before devolving into folk laments with added flute.

Trilogi Peradaban consists of 22 pieces taken from three recording sessions circa 2007-2008. On the album they are divided into three distinct sections named Neolithikum, Mesolithikum, and Palaeolithikum, or New Stone Age, Middle Stone Age, and Old Stone Age. This all lasts about 40 minutes during which Zoo range from cathartic bass and drum blasts, fierce howling and jabbering, to heavy riffing, deep but abrasive melodies, pseudo-operatic bombast and peaceful acoustic ballads.

The album title means Civilization Trilogy and while this is not a blow by blow account of Indonesian history there is an underlying complexity here that had me researching. Not least, the language and the origin of certain important words. The song "Merdeka" for example is clearly a battle-cry for independence. The word itself is from Sanskrit and has come to mean "freed slave" since Portuguese and Dutch domination of the region. "Merdeka" is among the first 16 tracks which combine a punk aesthetic with the avant-rock genre "zeuhl" as pioneered by Magma. Starting out with "Manekin Bermesin" which probably means something akin to "Puppet Machine" these short, sharp, blasts of aggression use bass guitar and drumming to ignite a musical firestorm. Simple folk sounds and pacing are gradually introduced in the Middle Stone Age section; the contrast is excellent.

Christian Zander of Magma, of course invented his own language -Kobaian- whereas Zoo appear to use Javanese with snippets of Sanskrit, poetry, Islamic references and punk politics. They incorporate a traditional Aceh poem on "Kelak" which doubtless refers to the recent quest for independence in that region. I had rather hoped it was a mention of the Cardassian Damar-class destroyer starship of the Cardassian Union's Central Command in active service around the year 2376 (as per Star Trek). Oh well, we can't have everything.

"Kelak" is part of the last section of Trilogi Peradaban wherein the group exhibit signs of having been possessed by ancient ghosts who shun aggression and modern electric instruments for a mode of expression which favors acoustic sound. Here Zoo slows rhythms and supplements its spirited wailing with mournful harmony and suling (a traditional flute). Throughout the album, lead singer Rully Shabara Herman whacks the jembe (hand drum) and his distinctive voice revels in both the grinding fury of much of the record and the minimal primitivism of the Old Stone Age section.

As aforementioned, this isn't a complete map or history of Indonesia. Indeed, it could be impossible to trace a path from what scientists believe is"Java Man," through Hindu and Islamic dynasties, into European (spice-trade motivated) co-option, independence, new orders, modern democracy, and East Timor, and somehow make coherent artistic sense of Indonesia (and its 17,508 islands). The territory is now home to the world's largest concentration of Muslims. Previously it was home to the world's largest concentration of communists outside of an actual Communist regime. That was until 1965 when (with a list of names from the always helpful CIA) the military and (in the words of Tariq Ali) "Islamist vigilantes" wiped out at least a million communists and their "sympathizers." One of Zoo's songs, "Perang, Saudara," quotes the word "Babat" from Pramoedya Anata Toer, a writer from that era. I'm not sure what the word means but he apparently said as much to Dutch colonists. He was imprisoned (probably for being a leftist) but survived until his death in Jakarta on April 30, 2006.

Zoo use the word "perang" (war) quite often and their music seems to contain both cathartic anger and an accompanying desire for peaceful humanity. I suspect this is a normal reaction to hearing about times such as those when scores of genitals of murdered male communists were hung outside brothels as a warning, but it might just be a healthy rejection of MTV Asia.

Calling all Sydney-based speed junkies and noise freaks, dualpLOVER, NIME and the Australia Council for the Arts invites you to sign up for the Vinyl Rally time trials.

Compete in DJ Smallcock’s Vinyl Arcade, a participatory play-set and sound / video installation combining vinyl fetishism, video arcade mystique and the machismo of motor sports in a video racing game played within a real world setting.

Starting Monday June 14th, particpants will be able to race remote control cars with audio pick-ups attached to their chassis through a course constructed from a mass of vinyl records. Using vintage video arcade consoles and video projections of the cars’ P.O.V., competitors will not only control the movements of the vehicles but also the parameters of the resulting sounds they create.

Held at NITROSEPTIMUS, 35 Septimus Street, Erskineville, tonight’s opening night will host free time to allow potential competitors to get a feel for the course. Drivers will then be able to sign up for the time trials to be held over the next five days. The fastest of these will then be invited back on June 21st for a closing night round robin to compete for prizes and the admiration of millions as the beauty of battle intermingles with broader aesthetics.

A place where art, fun and competition meet in a giant cacophonous roar, DJ Smallcock’s Vinyl Arcade opens 6pm on Monday June 14th, then two sessions daily from 12 – 3pm and 5 – 8pm until the final round robin on June 21st.

The second season of three is apon us with Auraltered State #3 and #4 just around the corner. The series persented by The performance space in association with dualpLOVER consists of eight free concerts conducted across 2010 focussing on the music of New South Wales as heard through the ears of Lucas Abela. These performances will cross a wide spectrum of music from the state, focused on presenting evenings of contrasting music’s from some of our more irreverent, innovative, unusual and original artists from now, then and the future. All shows will be held at the new Performance Space Clubhouse, situated in bay #12 which has a limited capacity of 100 patrons so please come early. This series has been kindly supported by the NSW ministry of the arts.

Auraltered State #3 - 29th May

Holy Balm

Holy Balm are a three piece psychedelic dance jam. Their heavy rhythms and droning textures have carved out a unique place in Sydney's underground DIY music and imrov scene. Holy Balm are informed by many styles of danceable inclusive musics as well as many forms of brutally heavy crack pot psychedelia. During live shows many dimensions of sound flourish into soothing rhythm potions, only to later transform into punch funk wobblies. Guitars become drums, synths form a molten expanse, blanketing the audience in waves of euphoria, disorientation and the impulse to move. The multiplicity of sound, dance and trance like states are all important to Holy Balm and hope to share this you when we meet. Pick it up and make a noise, make some time.

Purple Duck

Not to be confused with the Purple Loon, Purple Diver, Purple Grebe, Purple Gallinule or Purple Coot the Purple Duck is the more common name for the best MC in the world. Yes he’s very very good, well hot enough to burn down a herd of yobbo MC's like pieces of wood. The great purple quacker's masterful emceeing skills are not his only talent, beyond mere hip hop he can sport a quick succession of genres flying think and fast, his repertoire taking on everything from the pop punk rock anthems to tear jerking Balladeering.

Pimmon

Soundsmith Paul Gough aka pimmon was once a solitary music maker dabbling in sonics privately throughout the 1980's. This went on until 1999 when Paul finally decided to let the rest of us know what he was up to. Since his work has been fevourishly consumed, gaining seemingly instant worldwide recognition and popularity, and attracting the attentions of labels like Fällt, Tigerbeat6, Staalplaat, Dorobo, Celebrate Psi Phenomenon amongst many others whom over the last decade have helped him produce a prolific body or releases. His music is a unique mixture of drone- and glitch-based abstract digital soundscapes, which he creates using a variety of sound sources that he manipulates on his computer creating buzzes and blips, distorted rumbles, ghosts of melody, radar pulses, glitched ambience all melted into an unpredictable slab of sound that fluctuates on and off.

After years of glassing himself across the globe, Lucas Abela, has taken his glass playing in a totally new direction, incorporating a rhythm section, of drums - Peter Kostic (Regurgitator/ Hard-ons) and piano - Stu Olsen (Garbage & the Flowers/ Rand and Holland) who are collectively known as Rice Corpse. Formed in late 2009 after Lucas became nostalgic for the original but short lived Beijing line up with drumer Yang Yang (Mafeisan) and pianist Li Zenghui who recorded the album Mrs Rice and did a 10 city tour of China during his Asialink residency in 2008. It's not every day we receive news of the underground of Yogyakarta, a small province of Indonesia, located on the island of Java. For this is the place that serves as living quarters for Zoo, collectively shaken by a convergence of styles, which allows the flow in the native languages, and battered metal bizarre fetish for striking an infernal rhythmic organization of the Japanese Ruins. Indeed, such is the wood that burns in the short and violent attacks by the Zoo, which has even been cited to compare with the Magma absolutely unique, not so much the length of songs, but the approach to zeuhl (term used for a fusion of jazz with metal, complex melodies, sounds heavenly and all that Christian Vander sought to incorporate in its Magma). Moreover, zeuhl Zoo and sound good side by side.

But this is just one way of tackling a disk, which, despite generating a frenzy a dull, always finds improbable solutions for their rituals. And this turns out to be ritualistic tendency to force that pushes Trilogi Peradaban ( "trilogy civilization") to a ground pattern where the euphoria and intensity matter more than the allegiance to conduct a musical. As a whole, Trilogi Peradaban almost sounds to what could be the haka, a dance of intimidation of the selection of Rugby in New Zealand, turned into a histrionic opera. Ears acagaçam up.

Still, the Zoo did not deserve my best comparison free: Trilogi Peradaban come a long way to find this issue, which houses the disc in digipack velvety whose design is top class (which is not always the case in world music). Before that, the debut of the Zoo had been released in its entirety online and also divided into three cd-r. The latter explains a lot about the nature of a trilogy spread over three ages of stone. Embedded in this strange logic, the themes become more elaborate as the retreat of the time. Yesterday, as today, the Indonesians must be crazy."

Dokaka review on Egotripping

"My first encounter with Dokaka was several years ago, thanks to the amazing video game We Love Katamari. A human beatbox cover of the Katamari theme called Katamari on the Rocks was easily one of the highlights of the amazing game soundtrack – and it’s a theme that will get stuck in your head for DAYS. His other credits involve becoming a viral internet sensation via the blogosphere with his all-vocal covers of songs like Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit, as well as collaborating with Björk on her 2004 album Médulla – particularly on the well-known track Triumph of a Heart.
Dokaka’s debut album Human Interface is a hyperactive treat. Constructed from Dokaka’s signature style of recording layer upon layer of vocal insanity, which includes every musical element of a song including rhythm and bass, the 67 minute album is actually seventeen hours of sound, mixed into 88 tracks. Whilst the majority of tracks are less than a minute and the shortest jingles barely hit five seconds, it is the longer tracks that illustrate the true scope of Dokaka’s talent.
A broad range of musical influence is apparent throughout the album, with songs touching on genres that range from Baroque (Yamada – an interpretation of Pachelbel’s Canon in D) to surf rock (Obara is an incredible version of Miserlou). Other highlights include Neko Shakitori, a track built around Dokaka’s cat meow and Minato Kaze, an eerie almost-torch song.
All in all, the album would have benefitted from longer and more developed tracks, but listening to Dokaka’s Human Interface is the musical equivalent of the anime FLCL, or perhaps wandering through a Japanese arcade and catching an aural glimpse of every game you pass. It’s a schizophrenic delight that will leave you marvelling at the variety of noises that can be created by a single man."

Performance Space in association with dualpLOVER invites you to Auraltered State #2 the second of eight free performances to be conducted across 2010 focusing on the music of New South Wales as heard through the ears of Lucas Abela. NAKED ON THE VAGUE
Diving deep into a world of apocalyptic pop and psychedelic weirdness Naked On The Vague offer a modern take on the post punk aesthetic. Falling into existence in 2005 with a found organ, broken bass guitar, borrowed drum and some old doom poetry. Their 2007 debut album `the blood pressure sessions' attracted them the attention of seminal US label siltbreeze, who are set to release their second album. The album (their first as a four piece after the original duo acquired a drummer and bass guitarist) is one of the most anticipated local releases this year

BRADBURY
Sydney Australia's favourite chronically depressed, long term unemployed, alcoholic, asthmatic, homosexual electronic music pioneer. An early adherent to punderphonics, Gary Bradbury is a master editor of found sound, whether it be fastidious early experiments with reel to reel tape or working on today's digital palette. Since his early involvement with seminal post punk group Severed Heads during their golden years in the early 1980, he has worked with the Sydney Theatre Company on scores for The Tempest and MacBeth and released three solo albums.

CRAB SMASHER
Crab Smasher is a NSW based group of improvisational sound sharks crafting a frenzied hodgepodge of weirdo psychedelic noise rock and experimental pop delicious. The band formed in 2002 as a cheesy electronic novelty noise act and have since mutated through a number of confusing formations into the sellout 4-5 headed rock-and-roll hydra that exists today. With about 13 or 14 CDR, cassette, and digital releases to their name, the band is currently working on a new LP, which promises to be both titillating and queer.

James Ryan talks with Lucas Abela about his new project, Auraltered State.

One man who undeniably loves both art and sound is Lucas Abela, who has been working hard to ensure that the more experimental and innovative, but not necessarily very accessible side of music has a place it can call home. A co-founder of the DualPlover record label and artist-run performance space Lan Franchi's Memorial Discotheque, and performing as noise artist Justice Yeldham, Abela has a resume that can't be measured by chart success so much as the following his events have generated, and the bizarre excellence of the acts he's supported with them. Now he's organised Auraltered State - a series of eight performances comprising artists from across New South Wales. Ego Tripping's James Ryan asks him more...

While there are some Sydney stalwarts like Gary Bradbury appearing as part of the Auraltered States showcase, I see a lot of new names that I'm less familiar with. What was the response like when you were putting the roster together? Did it change your impression of what was happening across New South Wales in terms of experimental music?
Not really, I’m extremely familiar with all the acts playing. The festival or series is about the NSW underground, something I like to think I know like the back of my hand. I purposely haven’t booked the entire series, which runs 'til November, as I’m hoping to leave places open for new acts that may pop up during the year. I’m always excited about new generations of players and want Auraltered State to represent not just where we are or were, but where we are going.

The most apparent thread that runs through your listing are the visceral descriptions of confronting acts that don't quite fit into an established indie or electronic format and yet they seem to be active and creatively thriving. To my ears a number of acts also shared a frenzied but elated frustration in their sound. What set apart these acts for Auraltered State, and how much is "inaccessible" an insipid assumption about experimental music?
I don’t see any of the acts as inaccessible and booked them from the point of view of acts I think put on a good show and are both aurally and visually appealing to me. I can’t see why so called ‘experimental music’ can't also be entertaining beyond the audio - not that this is a prerequisite. For instance, Bradbury won’t be as visually engaging as the Vonn Krapp Family, unless he’s off his meds?

Sometimes punters can be intimidated by how serious some experimental acts can seem, but Auraltered States is presenting itself with humour and irreverence as well as a desire to push past the usual parameters. How important a factor is "fun" in art-music? Does it break the ice between performers and audiences or is it a part of the work itself?
Firstly, we should try and put the term ‘experimental music’ to bed in this interview, as it means nothing now as the experiment has ended and its now a genre with little experimentation by its fan-core artists. Like c’mon, they are little better than Wolfmother playing original interpretations of someone else’s experiments. For this reason I like to steer clear of the term, even though it’s an easy way to describe what’s going on. It has the wrong connotations for me and should be avoided.
In the press release I used the terms ‘more entertaining, innovative, unusual and new thought artists’ which hopefully describes what I’m trying to achieve here a little better. You ask about fun and yes, some of the acts I program will definitely be fun. Vonn Krapp Family for instance are a perfect example of a fun band that are also engaging musically. Other acts I plan to program, like Singing Sadie, also fit into this, but you’d be wrong to assume that is the principal driving factor.
What interests me is difference, even if it’s a slight difference; bands like Naked on the Vague who are at first glance an obvious example of the post punk revival, but to me unlike the others aren’t a genre cover band, but are bringing something new to it, furthering the music somehow. Innovation, no matter how slight, is extremely important to me. We just finished an entire decade without a musical revolution of any sort. People claim the 90s were shit, but at least they had techo. The last decade was the decade of revival where the biggest band coming out of the country was a Black Sabbath cover band who forgot the correct lyrics so just made up new ones! I truly hope we can get over this nostalgic ‘all music has been made’ trip and get on with buiness of fucking people's minds with a new music.
Last decade I fantasised that it was just because I was old and out of touch and somewhere in the world outside of my knowledge a music was going on where a youth were reinventing the wheel and minds were peeling. But I’m getting more and more worried that this didn’t happen and the new generation are just happy with playing dress up. It's why there is no real excitement at shows these days. As much as people say they love Kings Of Leon, Muse, or whoever the media shrouds as the new great band of our time, it’s inescapable when you listen that it's uninventive drivel, and because you’ve unconsciously heard it all before, you won’t scream like they did when rock and roll first came crashing down on society’s heads. Now rock and roll is society. For fuck's sake, AC/DC were on the cover of the Daily Telegraph today.
If I could have one wish for this new decade it’s that the new abandon the old and squeeze shit through the ears of today’s complacent music audience.

It's difficult to imagine the issues you and your collaborators have had to deal with in organising these events, with such a diverse range of acts. What drives you to do so? Is it important to make a space for that percentage of performers that don't fit in? Why?
It’s just because they don’t fit in is exactly why I champion such acts. ‘Experimental‘ festivals in general can be a very dry experience, except for the What Is? Music festival that has always brought us bang for buck and is a serious influence on the way I like to program music. Which is: 1) Contrasting acts: Who in their right mind wants to watch a series of carbon copy acts one after another? 2) No headliners: Each and every act I book is a headliner- no warm ups, just killer all the way. 3) Scene mixing: If this city is to work we must bring together some of our disparate scenes. We probably could have a better live music scene than Melbourne if somehow these fractured groups could meet and go to each others gigs, but that’s another interview…

Ego Tripping makes for two Zoo reviews in a day

"What the jiminy do I know about Indonesian music?! For all I know, an intellectually-impaired single mother in Jakarta has just accidentally synthesized the mythical long-lost note of E Sharp using nothing but a roll of old electrical cord and her teeth. Perhaps some sinister and ancient cabal is sworn to protect the horrible secret of E Sharp, and now it’s up to a sassy, effeminate hairdresser on the run from the law (or is he really only running from... himself?) to protect this young woman on her perilous trek to reach Dr Reginald Q. Oboe at the Vladivostok Conservatorium of Music before the accursed note becomes self-aware and Kills Us All.

This would be my educated guess. Fortunately, it’s safe for me to assume that you come from a position of relative ignorance as well. Three in ten Australians still think Indonesia is the country most likely to invade us. Australian tourism usually doesn’t progress beyond Ed Hardy-clad douchebags projectile vomiting en masse on the despoiled shore of Kuta Beach. Clearly, this is not an environment conducive to meaningful cross-cultural exchange.

Which is a shame, really. Over the last decade, one thing above all others has gifted Jakarta with a burgeoning DIY music scene. Firstly, the most easily accessible music media is MTV Asia, a 24 hour channel hosted by an endless procession of bland, American-accented Filipino girls introducing an endless procession of bland, American and East Asian R&B artists. Any casual watcher of MTV Asia will be hard-pressed to find such an egregious use of autotune and such an abundance of prepubescent men in all-white Beaver Boys outfits anywhere else in the annals of human civilization. it’s a truism of modern music that whenever the music industry tries to enforce hegemonic tastes onto the public, the vanguard of common decency takes to the barricades with electric guitars in hand.

So it is with Zoo’s album Trilogi Peradaban, a three part punk-rock “fuck you” to the stultifying blancmange that the failing business model of the major labels keep shitting out onto the airwaves and the narrow confines of the alternatives provided by indie and DIY labels in the West. It would be easy for modern-day hipster gentry in the English-speaking world to write this sort of thing off, but some cultural perspective is necessary here – too often we forget that not everyone in the world was bowing down and praying towards Seattle five times a day in the early nineties. Trilogi Peradban is part of the same musical renaissance that we went through twenty years ago – the purest expression of Cobain’s old “punk rock should mean freedom...” line – and this defies the Arctic Monkeys-induced cynicism to which people my age have become accustomed.

Indeed, there’s very little in this album that we’d recognise as “punk rock”, beyond the second part of Cobain’s Law – “...as long as it’s good and has passion”. Passion is in abundance on this album: passion for Indonesia’s heritage, passion for the country’s instruments, and passion for the local audience over foreign interlopers in tight jeans and asymmetrical haircuts. As the album’s trilogy progresses, whatever vestige of overseas influence gradually disappears as native instruments become more integral to the songs, and esoteric references to President Sokarno’s icy relationship with Malaysia in the 1960s and the Aceh independence movement are sadly lost on anyone unfamiliar with the language. So much of it is discordant, the singer’s occasional similarities with Mike Patton after a Red Bull binge can be off-putting, sometimes it actually does sound like they’re trying to find the long-lost E Sharp, but ultimately, this album is a forebear of great things to come from our northern neighbour."

ACRN gives Zoo 8/10 review

"The little-known genre of zeuhl found its roots in France in the 1970s, spearheaded by the prolific and grandiose band/cult Magma. A genre that somehow managed to combine free jazz, opera, blues shouting, progressive rock, heavy metal and chamber music, zeuhl made its impact on the avant-garde music scene by showcasing the duality between bombast and primitivism.

Since the sound was forged in Western Europe, zeuhl has been flung far across the globe, with numerous bands springing up in parts of Japan and, in the case of new-school zeuhl thrashers Zoo, in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Zoo pay homage to their zeuhl roots on Trilogi Peradaban (in English, “Civilization Triology”), the band’s latest release by Australian experimental music labels Dualplover and Tenzenmen. The album tells a story of societal devolution through the medium of highly syncopated bursts of bass and drums, frenzied vocalizations and, at its most primitive, ritual drumming and minimalistic folk balladry. The entire album lasts only 40 minutes, but contains 22 tracks.

The first 16 tracks on Trilogi Peradaban are evocative of the thrashy zeuhl sound championed by Japanese band Ruins, one of the many projects of uber-prolific drummer Yoshida Tatsuya. There is also a great deal of avant-grindcore influence, bearing similarities to the work of Melt Banana and Naked City. Much of the album's sound is made up of snaking bass lines and syncopated drumming reminiscent of a (somehow) more caveman take on the early powerviolence of Man Is The Bastard.

Across the entirety of the album, Zoo vocalist Rully Shabara Herman stands apart from the rest of the band, shouting, chattering and operatically chanting over the thrash-and-grind of his bandmates. The final part of the album is meant to convey a return to primitivism through organic percussion and neo-folk-influenced acoustic guitar arrangements that bring a calm ending to an otherwise frenzied album.

Trilogi Peradaban is an excellent, operatic take on neo-tribalism that makes a provocative statement, melding grindcore, folk and contemporary zeuhl sounds to convey a theme of societal collapse into a primal state of simplicity." 8/10 - Aaron Vilk

Yogyakarta's Zoo's successful concoction of its punk rock roots with a seasoning of traditional music elements makes them a beacon of the Indonesian Underground. MENSTRUATION SISTERS
Menstruation Sisters are more of a natural phenomenon than a musical group. Owing more to the sound of ice melting and eggs hatching than strummed guitars and pounded drums, the Sisters keep one ear on the ground and the other towards the atmosphere. Rather than working within the lines of modern rhythm and structure, they revert towards a primal direction, cutting off the fat and oozing forth only the most natural and unfettered sounds. Naturally, such a technique can be unsettling, as it's not something most humans are interested to hear, or have heard since upright-walking became a viable mode of transportation. This is music for those who kill their own food.

MAKERS OF THE DEAD TRAVEL FAST
With an eerie haunting simplicity The Makers Of The Dead Travel Fast’s sound was an unobvious take on post punk angularity. Originally active through 1979-1983, during Sydney’s golden age of DIY underground culture. Part of the legendary M squared label roster, they reformed last year to help launch a retrospective box-set 'Pardon me for barging in like this' on the label, released by German label VOD, and have since being writing and recording new material.

ABOUT THE CURATOR.
Lucas Abela has been an extremely active member of the Sydney musical community since he arrived here in from his native Gold Coast 1992. His musical contribution to the city has been immeasurable, producing radio for 2RSRfm, promoting countless shows and tours for local and international acts, hosting unique events in war bunkers, gay amusement parks and the infamous Drowning Man Festival on the Hawkesberry. He was also a founding member of the legendary DIY space Lanfranchi’s memorial Discothèque. His label dualPLOVER, started with close friend swerve in 1995 has produced albums for many of the city’s artists including Gary Brabury, Naked On The Vague, Singing Sadie, Suicidal Rap Orgy, Alternahunk, Funky Terrorist and others. They even starting a CD manufacturing consolidation in-order to help the broader musical community. Then there’s his own music practice! Over the last 18 Lucas’ initial turntable experiments have morphed into one of the most unique acts in the world. Described as "a trumpet player trapped in a two dimensional universe" Lucas’ unhealthy obsession with sheets of broken glass has astonished and bemused countless people in over 40 countries. By pressing his face and lips against discarded shards of glass he deftly employs various vocal techniques ranging from throat singing to raspberries to turn them into crude musical instruments. A one of a kind act that re-defines the expression "don't try this at home" and quite simply needs to be witnessed to be fully appreciated, let alone understood.

Dokaka, is a one manned voice, no effect, no auto-tune, no edit, no sampling, DIY human synthesizer. Most will remember him as the Japanese beatboxer whose vocal only reinterpretations of Led Zeppelin, Slayer, the Rolling Stones, and many others gained cult status when his mp3’s went viral. The sensation was enough to attract the attention of Björk who incorporated his unusual skill into her 2004 Medúlla album. Now in 2009 Dokaka has recorded his first album of original material ‘HUMAN INTERFACE’ which is now available for the first time outside of Japan courtesy of cultural maverick imprint dualpLOVER. The album includes 17 hours of vocal insanity multi-tracked into 88 muttered micro tracks.

Dokaka’s style is unlike that of the hip hop beatboxers, firstly he’s not really a beatboxer as he multitracks his vocals sometimes with as many as 20 passes per song. However the most important distinction is Dokaka’s intent. Without a Hip Hop background he first started vocally mimicking music while humming along to his television as a child and by the age of six was making tapes of his efforts. These childhood skills almost went unnoticed until he starting playing drums with bands as a teenager. During one practice after the bass player failed to show up, Dokaka filled in by humming the bassline. The singer was so taken with his vocal ability he encouraged him to record which lead onto his mp3’s / Björk and now this album.

Purple Duck is the best MC in the world and I know this because in his opening track I heard him warble a statement to that effect down a cheap microphone in a voice halfway between that guy from Ween and a Muppet while carnival music played. It may be a slight exaggeration, but he is pretty funny. His song about being bored contains a litany of inventive expletives as well as lines comparing the depth of his boredom to time spent with Ken Done’s paintings and Garfield. The songs are broken up by skits with names like Sex Falcon and Cunt Dracula, which probably tells you everything you need to know about them right there. He parodies cock-rock (the very MGF-sounding Love Tampon), exercise anthems (the Trey Parker-sounding Get In Shape) and maybe techno (Do You Want To Dance All Night). I honestly can’t tell with the last one whether it’s a joke or not – maybe that’s the joke itself, that it’s impossible to tell the repetitive parody from the real thing. When A Woman Cries doesn’t sound like a novelty song either, instead coming across like one of those Trash-era Alice Cooper weepy pop-rock epics with the big ’80s drum kicks, and doing a surprisingly perfect homage to them. In between he raps about booting the other ducks out of the pond, but he’s not so much a duck as a chameleon, able to transform himself into anything from Bauhaus (Rock Vampire) to Captain Beefheart (You With The Bear) at will.

Just when you thought that all trios of improvising musicians were just pretentious excuses to plink plonk and masturbate their way through the pretense that somehow the discordant mess they produce is actually a meaningful new direction in modern music for people who haven’t been schooled for 5+ years in modern composition and learned to hate music, along comes Rice Corpse.

It’s the work of Sydney based lunatic glass blower and noise extraordinare Lucas Abela, who if the press release is to be believed briefly became a cultural ambassador to China, spending two months in Beijing found pianist Li Zenghui (who is actually a saxophonist) and percussionist Yang Yang, jammed with them a few times and then dragged them into the studio for this monstrosity. It’s the funniest most visceral and compelling music this writer has heard for a very long time. At times Abela feels like he’s sabotaging the aforementioned plink plonk, tearing it apart with his aggressive howls, other times he sounds like some kind of wounded inhuman animal growling irritably whilst the piano and percussion rain down around him, then there’s the moment where it all coalesces into the adolescent noise frenzy that is spirited and unrelenting, a charging jam that you could only imagine as the sound of the apocalypse. Perhaps what I find most fascinating about Rice Corpse is how the trio don’t sound tied down to any particular form of improvisation as is so commonly the case. This may be because Abela’s contact mic’d glass through distortion pedals produces such a unique, and I would imagine quite difficult to play along with, sound, but really I believe it has a lot to do with the musicians desire to pull something quite unique out of the box. At times it’s quite musical, even positively melodic, at other times the humour comes from the ludicrous ill fitting nature of this trio, yet then it all becomes quite hysterical, pushing you to face head on, the joy, freedom and possibilities of experimental music – rubbing your face in it over and over again, until you just want to be left alone. Genius.

Vialka - Succès Planétaire International, review in dieshellsuit

I’ve been avoiding starting this review for a couple of days now. Not because this is a bad record, because it’s not, but more that I’m not sure how to approach reviewing it. Vialka have got me stumped. My frame of reference for this style of music is pretty limited and I hate to fall back on lazy journalism techniques, but the best way I can describe Vialka is like Gogol Bordello meets Battles. There’s a hint of Fugazi in there as well. Let me try again. Vialka are a two piece gypsy folk punk band from France. Succès Planétaire International is their sixth album. Their motto for this record was “more rock, less talk.” Most bands could do with taking their advice.

The first thing that you hear on Succès Planétaire International is what can only be described as a folk waltz riff being played by a tuba. This is the first thing that confused me. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a tuba being used on record. I guess there’s a first time for everything. The next thing that threw me was the drums and guitar. This is where the motto of “more rock, less talk’ comes into play. The drummer scatters around her snare drum and hi hat recalling the precise, syncopated style of Battles’ John Stainer, whilst the guitar plays a descending riff that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Fugazi record. Over the course of six minutes, Vialka twist and turn their way through four different time signatures, numerous stops and starts and at least three different musical styles. As odd as it is to compare a folk band to Battles, it’s not that far off the mark. ‘Good Riddance’ again showcases Vialka’s tendency towards intricate rhythms, with both guitar and drums showcasing restrained yet complex riffs, fusing both folk music and math rock seamlessly. Like a cross between Battles and Gogol Bordello.

World music is often seen as a dirty word, a genre with slight returns at best. On Succès Planétaire International, Vialka have proven not only that world music shouldn’t always be disregarded, but that you can produce interesting and thought provoking records under its umbrella, without sounding like one of those terrible bands that always get booked for Later With Jools Holland. Just remember: “more rock, less talk.”

Australian Lucas Abela is a larger-than-life performer and entrepreneur who has gained notoriety over the years for his uncomfortable live shows and the ultra-bizarre record label which he runs. Performing under his Justice Yeldham alias in the group Rice Corpse, he improvises on the new CD Mrs Rice (DUAL PLOVER 666) by playing amplified sheets of glass, probably using his mouth and his hands in alarming and unexpected ways, alongside an impromptu rhythm section he happened to pick up in China during a recent tour in that country. What a musical find that turned out to be. Pianist Li Zenghui bashes the keys to generate a demented misinterpretation of the records of Cecil Taylor, or John Cale's piano work on the first Velvets LP, while drummer Yang Yang from local band Mafeisan shows us exactly why he's earned his reputation as the "craziest exponent" of percussion in the Beijing area. A thrilling record results. With this added accompaniment, I feel that Abela's inchoate and formless noise has finally found a framework that gives it some real body and resonant presence, increasing its impact one-hundredfold. Needless to say with all that glass around, the sense of implied violence and bloodshed is never far away. - Ed Pinsent, the sound projector.

It’s not every band that you can swear by. To the contrary, forming a partisan relationship with a band – really barracking for them, believing in them – seems a rare treat nowadays, given our unprecedented access to music. The middle of the road is a mutant form of pest that requires tireless persistence to evade, but there are still bands – among whom Naked on the Vague are peers – who deserve close scrutiny, personal footnotes, pencil-case scrawlings and tireless, vitriolic debates with naysayers. You can and should lose friends over this band.

Lucy Phelan and Matthew Hopkins sound legitimately scary together. ‘Chitty Chat’ is a caustic, barely-conceived pop song gushing at its split seams with filthy, sourceless noise. The relentlessly quick and artificial percussion sounds as if it continues ad infinitum somewhere in a vacuum – existing on a frequency this duo only occasionally happen upon. Once found, they endeavour to sully it as brutally and efficiently as possible.

Phelan’s caterwauling is haunted by the oozing, reverberated baritone of Hopkins, and together they are sexless and malevolent. There is a primal energy here that sounds channelled, unreined, as if it’s pouring forth and exhausting its intermediaries. Indeed, where shit bands sound like they’ve drafted their songs to within an inch of the “Chicken Tonight” theme, fucking amazing bands like NOTV cheat their way through instinct, buckling to the pressures of the moment. ‘Chitty Chat’ has been rendered in different forms live but the documented version here could hardly be considered “official”, because the strict dogma of rendition means diddly squat where true art is involved.

It’s a shame that tradition and craft appears the predominant occupation of the mainstream indie scene. Here is a band where investment of belief is imperative and endlessly rewarding. Every young person with a cross to bear should hear, and believe in, this music. Some folk will fork out for the pretty looking artefact, play it once or twice and slot it in among their other collectible 7” singles – of course, the way NOTV disseminate their music appeals to collectors, trainspotters, dilettantes. Here’s a challenge though: play Chitty Chat over and over again, cherish it like you would the classics, and that’s exactly what it will become. Because that’s what it sounds like to me.

Mess and Noise - Review, Rice Corpse

For a lot of noise musicians, showmanship is often limited to a mild flailing of the body while they hover over an array of equipment and leads. Sydney’s Lucas Abela opts instead for cutting his face to pieces with treated plate glass – breathing, sighing and yelling into the mic’ed up glass until it breaks into shards, often taking portions of his face with it. Under the name Justice Yeldham, Abela has brutalised a few households worth of window pane for years now, but his recorded material has rarely excited attention among the uninitiated masses, who generally appreciate the spectacle first and the sonics second, if at all.

Rice屎Corpse is Abela’s improvised collaboration with two Chinese artists – Yang Yang of Mafeisan on drums and saxophonist-cum-pianist Li Zenghui. For anyone fascinated by Abela’s means but intimidated by its end, Mrs Rice is an accessible place to start. It’s noise rock, and while no less compromising in execution the presence of a rhythmic and melodic backbone breathes a welcoming “rock” dynamic into Abela’s mulched, overdriven glasswork. His foreign sonic vocabulary is translated here into a musical language most listeners can decipher.

When playing off the two-piece ensemble, which switches between foreboding menace and full throttle freak out, Abela’s vocals are given the opportunity to display a surprising myriad of range – whether it be the eerie wavering foghorn drones halfway through ‘Stamp on My Balls’, the subtle static malfunction of ‘Desktop Frog’, or the garish rhythmic hopscotch showcased during ‘Peking Duck’. Abela responds deftly to Zenghui’s keys, which often heave violently out of sparse melodic noodling into hammer-happy free jazz expressiveness. Yang Yang’s eagerness to give his whole kit a solid thrashing at every given opportunity means Rice屎Corpse rarely climb out of their rigid soft/loud MO, but the jarring transitions rarely prove predictable or tiring.

Which seems somewhat integral to Mrs Rice anyway. It’s a joyously gratuitous album, equally hilarious and punishing, maniacal and narcoleptic. Maximum volume is recommended to appreciate the catharsis at the heart of Rice屎Corpse, especially for those likely to glaze over the more challenging aspects of the record. Don’t be mislead: this is still a rough-as-guts ride, but hopefully Mrs Rice is evidence enough to sceptics that Justice Yeldham is much more than just a bloodstained showman.

This video of the slaughterin' slobberville rendition of 'Face the Music' recorded during our recent tour at the Donaufestival, Krems Austria will little to explain what actually happened, the easiest explanation is that Kevin Blechdom wanted to explore a new way of presenting mulitple acts on tour rather than my turn your turn her turn their turn and instead bound together, Kevin Blechdom, Blevin Blectum, Blectum from Blechdom, Ching Chong Song, Irene Moon, Christopher Fleeger, Ironing, Elisabeth King, Justice Yeldham and others who joined in for a show or part of the tour.

What came from this was a revelationary two hour show + sometimes 5 encores (if we ever tour again you must insist on the 5th encore, just keep clapping while we drink water backstage, you wont be disapointed) that was the more inspired and debouched collection of artists who spanned from alt country songs to ear splitting noise and everything in-between all in one act!

We first heard Purple Duck whoring himself with the evil and wrong rap stylings of Suicidal Rap Orgy, and somehow we knew he deserved better. On his debut solo album he’s thrown everything but the kitchen sink at it, and most of it sticks. But then it slides off at funny angles and it’s impossible not to laugh maniacally then be charmed by the insanity and creative dexterity of the duck-man. It feels like a comedy album, with a couple of skits such as Cunt Dracula, who is a nasty insensitive piece of work (even for a vampire) and Sex Falcon which is about a falcon that terrifies townsfolk by penetrating them and then dropping them off a mountain two hours away. Yes I know it’s juvenile but it doesn’t stop it being funny. And it’s part of the charm of Purple Duck who uses hip hop, funk, house, indie folk, blues and electro pop to get his light humorous messages across. Despite his dexterity it’s impossible to dislodge the notion that he’s taking the piss out of the listener, possibly because the humor tends to overcompensate the soul of the music. That is except for When a Women Cries where the Duck adopts a Flaming Lips vocal style though almost seems to ruin the emotional sincerity by adding a catchy electro groove. Then there’s Bored, where The Duck describes how bored he is, demonstrating a remarkable ability to creatively curse and an almost implausible vocal dexterity. Duckside of the Moon is the antidote to the polished production and vacant content of most current day albums, and as a result should be encouraged.

This traveling showcase of cross-collaborating artists is an ever-changing sequence of first person vignettes hung loosely from the underlying conceptual history of a genetic mutant civil war in 2024? While the story takes place decades into the future, the format and aesthetic borrows heavily from the vaudevillian traveling shows of the past. As a general rule zines and maths text books suck balls. Big hairy syphillitic balls. yeah that's right, one's with syphillis on them.

So how is it that a zine posing as a maths text book is bordering on absolute fucking genius? It could be that your maths text book was never written with a dedication inside the front cover declaring it to be, "more mathematics for the lazy, the marginalised and the down at heel citizens of the world, it's ok I'm here to help."

Or it could be that all those stupid examples from math texts using trains and council workers digging holes are just useless and boring to boot? Not to mention barely credible - have you ever seen a council worker actually working?

Whereas Trash Maths uses real life and somewhat believable situations like this one about our new 'friend' Ahmed.

Ahmed is an illegal immigrant and gave his 'boss' his passport so he could work off his fare. If he needs to make $5000 for a ride in a shitty, leaky boat to Australia and his 'boss' is paying him $2.50 an hour, how long will Ahmed have to work before he gets his passport back?

See, maths isn't so boring when real life situations are used. Inherently more memorable than all that shit about trains travelling in opposite directions too. Who gives a shit about trains anyway? Your slightly retarded cousin doesn't count, I don't care how much he knows about fucking trains. *

I'm sure there's been some research done on how kids retain learning much better if it's fun and Trash Maths is nothing if it ain't fun. Which must be said is worlds away from any maths text book let alone poxy zine you've ever read. This includes the one your zitty sister is crying over in her bedroom right now, wallowing in her Smiths-induced stupor.*

Which is how Sheryl the masseuse spent her lonely teenage years before realising she could get $75 for every client. If Sheryl has 5 clients a day and pays 10% GST plus $20 to the house per job, how much will Sheryl make in a week?

As if that bitch pays tax, and if you take into account "Lonely Ron" one of her regulars, Sheryl could clear at least $1500 a week.

So that brings us back to our new 'friend' Ahmed. It would've taken him 2000 hours to get his passport back. But Ahmed is a hard cunt from Beirut who ended up stabbing his boss and taking his passport back by force.

VIALKA - "Succès Planétaire International" (dualPLOVER)

Wow! This time around, the Vialka disc finds itself cozy against a piece of black felt wrapped in gorgeous photography (Wenxi Xiong, you win!) and cool, abstract art. Yup, here they are again - so glad to see somewhat wistful-looking pictures of these globe-conquerors, confident in their new madness... even a new swank logo! It's almost as if they're trying to lull you into a posture of comfort, to be utterly obliterated by the waiting tones on the record.

Premiers Pas opens with some incredible brass... What, a tuba? Gay and lovely... Strange blasts of frothy vocal nonsense... Flute brilliance -- moving from chanteuse to big, russian-style choirs. Oh man, they're at it again - and their musical chops are better than ever.

The new-heavy-heavy rock moments are new (to my recollection) and Boros is sounding better, stronger, faster on the vox - he sounds a bit like Jello Biafra now, which is awesome. The surf-gypsy moments are lovely and confusing... especially with "yahoo!" staidly yelled over top... and then funk! All this with synthesizers buzzing along at the edge of perception as well... Distorted vox clips all over the place... The end of 100% Hello is a glitch destructo clip-art fest which one shouldn't try to decode - just let it do to you what it wants to.

One For The Road starts with a yummy-fuzzy Boros high-life guitar tone and shuffle-a-gogo with Frecheville drumming the bounce to the cosmos. It's hard to say what of this is Pro Tools and overdubbing, but the drums are sounding astoundingly tight. What group would bother with such regulated tightness on such a mad trip? Whether it's editing or immaculate playing, it sure packs a punch.

This duo, being effervescent world traveler magis are clearly operating on a different frequency, but rocking their chops most days and nights has translated into a recording monster-engine. I actually wrote something similar, on reviewing their 2005 release "Curiosities of Popular Customs", and it's hard to believe how much they've further tightened up on this record.

The odd verbal 'shit, i fucked up' and similar are amazing, almost like Easter eggs among the vortex... Here they leave lots of room for solos and shared musical moments and cool little tricks. Good Riddance features minimalist tuned perc and guitar sequence-type arpeggiated motives which circle and develop - this feels distinctly African, but the inspiration might come from anywhere. The only other type of omni-world-music like this I can think of is generated by Dead Can Dance, where any ethnicity becomes 'every' ethnicity or perhaps The Great Ethnicity. The eerie sense of a cosmic Other is threatened by looming presentments of thrash metal and then ends on a major seventh: very weird. Not music for normal folks, to be sure.

Do What Now? starts like a high-life remix (actually based on a traditional Shona mbira piece) and then ends up a pointed, more dangerous rock-out with chanting - incomprehensible and still catchy as hell. Interjected guitar rush-rock-outs are ever present. I think the one word for this record is "illusive".

The bass drum hits in Dutar remind you that what you're listening to is not only really fucking weird and cool, but also exquisitely engineered - the mix, with all its strange smattering of sounds is packed with character and all the parts occupy a nice, funny realm of their own, making up a highly listenable mix of musical gnomes. Technically, this should be impossible music to listen to, but the mix goes a long way to helping the brain make sense of things. It must have been very challenging to mix and master this stuff - kudos to Bob Drake (recording) and whoever did the mastering. It also seems Drake was responsible for the editing; clearly, hands-down, a true genius at the controls. The mixing treatments and edits are so subtle across the board - seemingly impossible for a project of this scope and complexity.

Always Against brings up an interesting point: the listener disappears out of complete avant-garde abstraction for a moment to settle into what appears to be a vivid and powerful mood - quite devoid of the manic, painted blobs of half-jokingness. So the thought is: wow, if Vialka were to sit down to take us through a 'conventional' musical, static-for-four-minutes experience, or a whole record of that... What would happen? Would Vialka, without the miasma, still be Vialka or would Vialka evaporate? With the intensity and the truth of this powerful moment, one realizes 'shit this band is actually exquisite and might be hiding really intense and beautiful songs' - which, of course, is not the point of Vialka. Is exposing this fact the demolishment of the Vialka entity? The very fact that the question is raised is likely proof that Vialka is doing its job. Viva Vialka!

Hole in my Bucket pretty much drives the point home - the true international experience is a world full of crazy hillbillies on fire. Vialka has seen the world - and that's what they've written. Trying to be legit and weirdo at the same time, Frecheville's warbling songbird tones - luscious singing apparently lost and re-found in the 1930's - make you melt. (You've got to want to be a fly on the wall during this married couple's arguments!) Boros as muttering Henry (Henri) is beyond great - if it doesn't make you want to listen to the whole album AGAIN and twice as loud, I'd be very surprised.

With a record like this, you don't highlight 'good songs'... this is one of those records, perhaps like those of Frank Zappa, where you say, 'wait, wait, here comes this part!'... and then mouth sing it and gesticulate to get the point across. My favourite album moments: Premiers Pas @ 2:39 is one of the best screams in recorded history. 100% Hello @ 2:03 ... I count the seconds until this gets sampled by hip-hop funksters. Always Against @ 3:33 is an intense bass-driven rock out with monster fills that progs too and fro. Frecheville's flat coaxing of Henry is fun and mental.

Vialka has presented another incredible ride through an astounding and confusing musical space - it will demand your concentration, and you won't be able to concentrate on anything else once you put it on - by far their best compositions and recording to date. Let's hope dualPLOVER can further disseminate the genius of Vialka to a wider audience than the world-weary tot-toting duo has already done by themselves.

Amongst the huge music geeks I know, only a very few have developed a taste for noise. It’s a bit puzzling, since you'd expect that over a half-century, noisicians could have popularized some basic semantics through sublimation if nothing else. Sometimes I wonder whether noise is at risk of extinction. Enter Lucas Abela, an outlier in noise history for creating a window (no pun intended) into noise love for uninitiates as much as vets.

Under the Justice Yeldham moniker, Abela is most infamous for playing panes of broken glass with his mouth. The sheet is amplified by a contact microphone which picks up the vibrations of his lips against the surface. This signal is manipulated further by a slew of pedals. For his quarter hour show, Abela grunts, squelches, hisses and farts with face pressed to pane as he gradually destroys the instrument. Afterwards, scattered glass, spit and blood cover the floor.

Abela has attracted global attention and, from my experience, has made noise's esoteric content more accessible. "One of the most important things when I play," he tells me, "is that you can see the relationship between my actions and the resulting sounds. This is something that's been missing in a lot of contemporary music practice, whether it be lap-toppers or platinum selling singers." With one multifaceted device, Abela offers a compelling physical analogy to his music.

Abela began as an experimental "turntablist", destroying records on high-speed industrial motors with unconventional styli. He met some success here, in particular through a questionable Otomo Yoshihide remix which Yoshihide himself admired. The always-ahead Bananafish requested a very early '97 interview after Abela's first release, A Kombi – Music to Drive-by, a recording of his old VW van's death shudders amplified through its shoddily grounded stereo.

Over the years Abela has amplified sword fights, sucked on amplified metal skewers, performed while bouncing on an electroacoustic trampoline and played amplified dick piercings by touching his collaborative "partner" to complete their circuit. Then at one concert in 2003, he saw a pane of glass in a corner and thought he should play it. "When I first noticed the sheet, it was instinctual to pick it up and try it out."

After his initial discovery, he began to focus on the glass exclusively, touring the show extensively across the globe. Over the years he has come up with a myriad of glass playing techniques which have seen this noise instrument become more and more musical. To show off this aspect, he has decided to form his first 'real' band while living in Beijing. The band, Rice屎Corpse, (which comes from the literal translation of 屎, the Chinese character for shit) with Yang Yang on drums and Li Zenghui on piano, have already recorded the album 'Mountain' and at the time of writing are conducting a 10 city tour of China.

Abela also co-runs Dual Plover records, which he founded in 1995 and funds by cheaply mass-producing CDs for other labels. Dual Plover primarily features fellow Australian artists such as Naked on the Vague, Toxic Lipstick and the mysterious Volvox, but also includes a few international submissions as well, most notably from Deerhoof, Merzbow and Kevin Blechdom.

Although Abela's breakthroughs can be revelatory for the less-than-enthused with noise, his translations can be a double-edged sword. He often has to combat a reputation as the avant-garde's freak show. "Early on at a show in Belgium someone described my set as being like GG Allin, an artist I personally feel no affinity with, he’s all shock tactics without any real content. Basically a really bad rock band with a lunatic as a singer. I'm not interested in such infamy. It would be all too easy to play the psychotic sadomasochist role with what I do, but that's not me."

Abela does often bleed heavily from cuts on his mouth, not to mention from smashing the pane against his forehead and biting off shards with his teeth. I sat next to an audience member who got cut pretty badly from flying glass as the rest of the spectators stared with wide eyes and slack jaws, cringing as Abela slid his lip against a sharp edge.

But anyone will admit they saw a lot more than gore. As violently intense as Yeldham's act can get, he isn't above the classic Kindergarten silly-face on glass with farting sounds to match. This is one of the stranger audience reactions - looks of horror followed immediately by laughter. Moreover, as improvised noise is often sloppy and uncontrolled, it was surprising to see what precise and varied sounds Yeldham produces by pressuring different areas of the glass and manipulating his pedals. It's in these varying textures, Abela insists, that his primary interests lie.

"If you listen, you should be able to hear a vast range of sounds which I'm able to conjure from just a random piece of broken glass. That should create enough wonder in people without the blood and saliva, but people always tend to focus on that. Glass is the most perfect material I had ever come across on various levels, most especially aurally. Not only does it sound unique, it's also very warm and responsive to my nuanced vocal techniques. Visually, it's humorous and powerful all at once and psychologically it strikes nerves within people, making it a wonderful three-pronged attack on the audience's senses."

Abela also insists that his music is not violent and that contrary to popular belief never screams into the glass or purposefully cuts himself. The energy is the same kind you would expect from a high-flying guitar or saxophone solo. "I prefer a live delivery every time. I may not have the range of sounds a lap-topper can achieve but I enjoy my limitations and personally think it's more liberating to create music organically with such limitations and a finite amount of possibilities than to have to choose between infinite musical decisions on a sterile platform."

The nonchalant origins of the act proved typical of Abela as I got to know him a little better. It's difficult to speak at length about Abela's music because he tends to avoid waxing philosophical. It's as if any high-reaching claim about his music would evoke an "uhhhh...well, it's not really that complicated. I just get up there and play." Abela's nonchalance sometimes comes out in hilarious ways. I've never seen anyone jump up as quickly as Abela to dance to Dee Lite at a party. Even better is that he knows all the words to Britney Spears' Toxic.

As intense as Abela's performances can get, he maintains an unpretentious stage presence, determined to prove his normalcy. If the audience were expecting a psychopath to back up the legends, it found something unexpectedly normal. Abela combats the gore and horror of his act with an attitude saying, "don't get too worked up, it's really not that strange.”

What kind of government would send a lunatic artist, whose idea of self expression is smashing amplified glass against his face, off to China to become a cultural ambassador? Australia the lucky country of coarse! And that’s’ exactly what happened to Lucas Abela (Justice Yeldham) and this album, Mrs Rice is it’s result. With under two months in Beijing he formed the pick up band Rice屎Corpse, (named after the Chinese character for shit, 屎 which itself is the combination of two characters "尸" corpse and "米" rice), jammed with them four times (two off which were recorded for this album) before heading off for a ten city tour of China.
A Trio of glass, drums and piano was in Lucas’s minds ear when he arrived and two completely different musicians came forward to form this unlikely band. First to be recruited for drums was Yang Yang whose antics in his own band Mafeisan has given him the reputation of being the craziest exponent of the normally conservative Beijing scene. His ultra loud out and proud personality is in stark contrast to the mild mannered and brutally shy saxophonist Li Zenghui who came to the project as pianist, cause simply put there were no suitable pianists in the city.
Existing for a limited time and without a common language to interrupt they managed to create these six varied and strangely focused improvisations. This despondent attempt at musicality is by far Abela’s most accessible work to date as the addition of Yang and Li’s stabbing rhythm section forced the seasoned noisician to take his glass instrument into surprising new directions. Released on conjunction with SUBJAM and made possible with the kind assistance of Asialink and the Australia Council for the Arts.

Slaughterin' Slobbersville is a traveling showcase of cross-collaborating artists. The show is an ever-changing sequence of first person vignettes hung loosely from the underlying conceptual history of a genetic mutant civil war in 2024. While the story takes place decades into the future, the format and aesthetic borrows heavily from the vaudevillian traveling shows of the past. The artists involved come from a variety of backgrounds - mostly from around the United States. Musically rooted in experimental, computer, noise, cabaret, and spoken word traditions, the artists all share a common passion for combining theater and music into visceral performances that defy expectations.

Costumes and sets are created from refuse and inexpensive materials often found along the journey. This contrasts sharply with highly technical computer driven projections, electronic music and sophisticated conceptual content. Collaborative contributions include the design of project specific software, homemade synthesizers, original compositions, choreography, and story-telling. The dichotomy between the makeshift folk aesthetic and techonology is intentional; causing a suspension of disbelief between order and chaos that helps the viewer integrate with Slobbersville.

Although the core narrative of the show is well defined, the professionalism of the performers allows for a freedom of creative evolution from show to show. This is a central theme of vaudevillian traveling shows and is our motivating factor for undertaking this project. Video documentation throughout the tour will illustrate the unfolding development of Slobbersville and capture the resulting spontaneous collective inventions.

"It’s been a while since we heard from Lucas Abela and his Dual Plover label out of Australia, a label whose catalogue proudly includes some of the stinkiest, most unlistenable records ever made, often produced by barely-existing artistes with implausible names whose sole aim is apparently to offend, disgust and irritate. Yep, it’s fair to say Abela’s tastes and predilections tend to gravitate towards a very peculiar strain of the grotesque in underground music, but in today’s anything-goes climate, seeking out such marginal geniuses takes some doing. With this fresh batch of releases, you may not find everything exactly to your taste (I certainly didn’t), but I feel it’s important to defend music and noise of such distinctive character – even more so at a time when all we have left is coffee parlours and juice bars all serving the same bland liquid refreshments wherever you go, and the only thing that apparently matters in life is sorting out your car insurance…

Sydneysiders Naked On The Vague offer whatever debris came out of The Blood Pressure Sessions, nine deliciously primitive tracks of harsh electro-doom punk played in monotonous ways with thumping bass, plodding drums and demented electronics. A male and female singer pitch their mannered shouty vocals to evince every emotion from bored, nihilistic resignation to a fevered, insane anger. Only in places (’Brown Sun / Sydney Lane Rd’) do these undergrounders approach anything that might fit in with the school of benign psychedelic droning such as their fellow countrymen Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood do so convincingly. Rest of the disc is just packed with good, seething menace. Hard to believe it’s just a duo making all this racket; almost as strong as early Royal Trux.

Toxic Lipstick have released Poopin’, a sickly monster decorated in a garish and excessive cover of elaborate eye-searing collages, while the inserted booklet is a hideous pastiche of teen-girl magazines. 10 of these 11 tracks are ‘classic’ pop-song length, nothing over 2 ½ minutes, and their extremely provocative titles promise much psychological mayhem and wanton sexual hi-jinks, lifting the lid on the obsessions and libido of an imaginary teenager in a stark no-holds-barred manner. It takes some constitution to endure the shrill and squeaky voices which scatter their random vocals over these hyperdriven beats and sick electronic thrashy noises (this record’s contrived cheepniss makes Bow Wow Wow sound like Mozart), but fans of Space Streakings or Melt-Banana will be quids in.

Al Duvall’s Recluses Unite…appears to be an attempt at a Tiny Tim revival, as Brooklyn-based songster Duvall picks up his banjo and sings 17 songs which are freakish pastiches of Edwardian, Music-Hall and early country songs (the sort of material for which Tiny Tim had genuine affection, and he included a vast cache of near-forgotten material in his repertoire). Even the CD label is printed to look like an old 78 disc. Al Duvall’s variant on these genres is to add a slightly more salacious and disreputable streak to these songs with his inventively twisted black-comedy lyrics, throwing in dirty punchlines and shades of modern depravity that our Edwardian ancestors would have blanched at. There’s also however an equally strong streak of utter weirdness and lowbrow surrealism, not too far away from the malarkey of Charles Gocher or Revd Fred Lane. When delivered in Duvall’s deadpan singing voice, this tends to leave a very odd taste in the mouth.

Sissy Spacek’s French Record, extreme as it is, finds this listener on slightly more familiar ground. This John Wiese noise project of long standing includes, for these sessions, Kevin Drumm, C. Spencer Yeh, Kate Hall, Sam Ott and Corydon Ronnau playing in various combinations, resultant tapes quite possibly edited extensively afterwards by Wiese to reduce the whole affair to sonic rubble and cut off any energetic bursts of improvisation at the knees. Much impolite and awkward repellent noise seeps forth, creating the sort of spiky, angular effects that tend to repel most civilians. Another gloriously anti-social release from Wiese."

''Fourth (?) release by the terrific French duo of Eric Boros (guitar and voice) and Marylise Frechevile (drums and voice). I have had the great pleasure of seeing them twice, and they amazed me with their stupendously tight and humorous music and stage antics. I don't want to ignore Eric's contributions - he's a great player - but Marylise is the star of the show. She's a fucking great drummer in the Guigou Chenevier style and she'll suddenly leap up from behind the kit and do a little dance while continuing to sing with Eric backing her up before she leaps back behind the kit!! This new one has some added instrumentation and good 'behind the scenes' work from Bob Drake. Highly recommmended - and SEE THEM if you can (they tour constantly).''

Not to be confused with the Purple Loon, Purple Diver, Purple Grebe, Purple Gallinule or Purple Coot the Purple Duck is the more common name for the best MC in the world. Yes he’s very very good, well hot enough to burn down a herd of yobbo MC's like pieces of wood. Plover fans would undoubtedly remember the duck from his appearance on the seminal ‘Suicidal Rap Orgy’ album ‘ Genital Warfare’. On this his debut solo album ‘Duck Side of the Moon’ we find the less threatening side of duckmania. Here the great purple quacker displays that his masterful emceeing skills are not his only talent. You will not only find dope duck styles hip hop tracks here, alongside come a quick succession of genres flying think and fast, the album having everything from the punk rock anthem of 'Love Tampon' to the tear jerking Balladeering of 'Everyone’s Dying'.

Since it’s initial 2007 release, Naked on the Vague’s debut album ‘the Blood Pressure Sessions’ has gone on to floor people across the globe landing them with a enviable vinyl re-issue on the influential US imprint Siltbreeze and commanding reviews like “like something from a claustrophobic horror-movie soundtrack” from Pitchfork, “Co-ed duo wanderings of a decidedly dark and altogether chilling nature, either bending in a beautifully ebbing continuous tone meander, or thumping chest with steel-eyed intensity” from Dusted, and "if this was released 30 years ago, it would be studied and discussed with fervor just as other No Wave classics are getting treated today." - Jackson Glass.

The album is a deep dive into the depths of apocalyptic pop and psychedelic weirdness. Disparate vocals grip onto stabbing keys and menacing hook-laden bass lines, pushed on by a relentless drum machine, far past its warranty period, giving the whole of their sound a sonorous curtain of ecstatic foreboding. Essentially a ‘punk’ assault ranging from some almost dance-able short and sharp ‘hits’ to gloomy extended freak-outs. Lucy and Mathew take direction from where the short lived no-wave movement ended, expanding on what that imploded scene could have garnished had it not succumbed to its own fatalistic shortcomings.

Now in its second edition as demand for the album increases across the globe, the band are about to descend on their third US tour including a 2nd appearance at the auspicious SXSW festival in Austin.

swerve and i realised recently that whenever we updated our current affairs page we were deleting the labels history, so we thought lets turn that page into a blog instead so that if someone new to the label wanted to scroll through our past events etc they could.

therefore this blog will probably have quite a few posts to start with as i ad all the newer updates from the last couple of months that are still relevant before deleting the current affairs page once and for all.
