Objet inusité @ Eastern Bloc, Montréal Starts Today

19 - 22 December 2012
OBJET INUSITÉ
International Summit on Audio Art

Eastern Bloc, in collaboration with Suoni per il popolo festival, presents Objet Inusité, an international summit bringing together 15 artists and curators from Montreal and abroad, to collectively explore and discuss the audio/visual aspects of digital art through non-screen based practices. Through exploratory workshops and site-specific installations and performances, particular emphasis is placed on audio art practices that use the "object" as interface, concentrating on objects of an uncommon/non-standard/residual nature. This 4-day event will explore how objects, imbued with a persona, may be activated by their user to take on a life of their own, in a performative or installation context. The presented works seek to examine how the activation of these objects allow for a spontaneous, accidental materialization of the hidden persona of these otherwise inanimate objects. They look at how an object, whether of a discarded or useful nature, can take on a cultural relevance, and how that cultural relevance can be reinterpreted and re-appropriated for an artistic context.

Balls For Cthulhu & Pinball Pianola Exhibition

Balls For Cthulhu (2012)
Game by Lucas Abela - Graphics by Rev Kriss Hades
Additional elctronics by Hirofumi Uchino & Daniel Stocks
$2500 ono

A pentagram shaped pinball game played by five players at once, each stationed at each of its five points. All outer triangular walls of all five points have guitar necks strung up with their fret boards exposed to the play field. In the center of the pentagon has a mass of pop bumpers connected to a drum machine creating blast beats and the balls speed about the game. Legendary guitarist and artist from the Australian metal band Sadistik Exekution Rev Kriss Hades has emblazed his incredible art onto the machine.  (due to circumstances beyond our control this is exhibited as a work in progress which will be completed during the course of the exhibition, if you would like an email to inform you when the game will be available to play please provide your address on the list provided near the work)

Pinball Pianola (2012)

Game by Lucas Abela - Graphics by Keg de Souza
Additional elctronics by Hirofumi Uchino & Daniel Stocks
$2500 ono

A Frankenstein experiment, combining the greatest musical invention of all time, the Piano; with the coolest amusement machines ever conceived; Pinball, to create an interactive sound installation like no other; 'Pinball Pianola', a musical device constructed by replacing the keyboard, hammers and front paneling of an upright piano, with a pinball cabinet butted up perpendicular against its exposed strings. Embracing high and low culture this instrument allows virtuosos and wizards alike to pit their skills in a game where musical compositions are created as metallic balls jettisoned into the game clash with the pianos resonating wires.

Vinyl Rally @ Lueften Festival (Frankfurt)

The vinyl rally is an large-scale installation combining sound art, video art and kinetic sculpture into every kid and kidult’s dream-hybrid; an immersive participatory play-set playing off vinyl fetishism, video arcade mystique and the machismo of motor sports in a video game played within a real world setting!

Classic first person video racing is simulated as remote control cars with styli attached, race across a track constructed from a mass of disused vinyl records. Transmitting sound (produced as the styli skim along the vinyl surface) and vision (from wireless spy cameras mountedto the front of each car) to reengineered old school racing consoles with immersive 50” flat screens. Here players navigate the course from the vehicles point of view, not only controlling the cars movements, but also the parameters of the resulting sounds they create via a series of unique audio effects mounted onto the dashboard (by Last Gasp Laboratories) giving each car its own distinct aural flavour. These sounds are emitted from speakers built into the seats causing them to vibrate in correspondence with the movements on screen, producing a personally immersive experience aurally, visually and physically that can only be truly appreciated seated at the controls.

Pinball Pianola (showing off)

I’ve devised a Frankenstein experiment, combining the greatest musical invention of all time, the Piano; with the coolest amusement machines ever conceived; Pinball, to create an interactive sound installation like no other; ‘Pinball Pianola’, a musical device constructed by replacing the keyboard, hammers and front paneling of an upright piano, with a pinball cabinet butted up perpendicular against its exposed strings. Embracing high and low culture this instrument allows virtuosos and wizards alike to pit their skills in a game where musical compositions are created as metallic balls jettisoned into the game clash with the pianos resonating wires. This experiment the first of in a series of individually crafted instruments I’m constructing at Artspace as part of my Australia Council music board project fellowship that introduce musical elements into the iconic game of pinball, making sound generation - not scoring - the games’ main objective.

The work will be shown for the very first time* at the Artspace open studio (not gallery upstairs level 2 enter door to right as you enter) form 6pm til 8pm 25th May and all day 11am to 5pm on Saturday the 26th.

Senyawa's Second Album

Senyawa are an experimental music duo made up of Rully Shabara (extended vocal technique) and Wukir Suryadi (homemade instrument). Who create music is a combination of extended vocal technique and a homemade instrument. The instrument was handcrafted by master instrument builder Wukir out of one long piece of bamboo, it is a string instrument with guitar pick-ups—it is amplified and processed through several effects pedals but at times is played as an acoustic instrument, percussion instrument or bowed like a cello.

VINYL RALLY @ Palais de Tokyo (Paris) April 2012

In conjunction with Sonic Protest, the The vinyl rally has been selected to be part of the reopening celebrations of Paris’ prestigious Palais de Tokyo in April where it will be presented from 12pm on the 12th to Midnight on the 13th for a 36 hour non-stop exhibition. However the work is only one of many filling the three story complex during this massive event and sadly our allocated budget only covers half our estimated budget to Build, Maintain and Staff my proposed track design that careers (see below) over the 3rd floor stairwell. Therefore I’m hoping to raise AUD$3000 to help cover this shortfall with a pozible crowd source. Hopefully you can help me overcome this financial hurdle so I can showcase the work in its best possible light at this amazing exhibition.

if you already have a facebook account logging on is as simple as a click otherwise joining pozible is not to hard.
Thanks in advance and fingers crossed we get over the line.
